Hhhuhhh….hehhhhHhhuhhh….hehhhh Hhhuhhh….hehhhh
His breathing had become less steady and more panicked the further the darkness spread. It seemed that no matter how fast or far he ran the shadows followed, devouring all in their path.
His friends, family, everyone he knew was slowly being engulfed in darkness. His feet beat a steady rhythm against the smooth sidewalk, as Rale rushed through the streets of Hope. The floating city, which had once been a beacon of its namesake, was now slowly falling apart.
Streets that had once been littered with people were now bare, seemingly void of all life, save for the young man who rushed down them this very moment. Dark auburn hair flew off his brow, as Rale sprinted down the sidewalk leaping over cars, mailboxes and any other objects that blocked the quickest route to the shopping center.
She was supposed to be waiting for him there, at the arcade. If anything happened to her, Rale would never be able to forgive himself.
Giving chase was the black ooze that had covered the city and turned its inhabitants into mindless drones. They were deformed monsters now, with no definite shape. They were shadows and they obeyed the Forgiver.
Reaching a point where the dark, formless void met and converged, Rale turned and bolted down an alleyway. If anything happens to her, I’ll never forgive myself!
Liara!
Hands reached from the void barely missing the young man’s sneakers with each desperate grab. He couldn’t give up now, he had to keep fighting, and he had to keep running. He could see the Shopping Center off in the distance, cloistered in between two large sky scrapers. The buildings stretched upwards and disappeared into the twisted spiraling grey that had been clouds earlier that day.
The world was spiraling in on itself, desperately trying to fight the Forgiver’s darkness and losing horribly. Lightning cracked, illuminating the sky, but no thunder followed. Taking a deep breath, Rale ducked his head and charged. It was a straight shot to the Shopping Center, a small gathering of cars blocked his path but they wouldn’t be much trouble once he got there.
Swinging his arms, desperately trying to gain some form of momentum, Rale rushed towards the shopping center and towards the cars. He had to get to her, he didn’t know what he could do to save her, but he couldn’t let Liara face this darkness alone.
“LIARA!!!!”
The Darkness followed.
